Family favorite German Red Cabbage
1 large red cabbage
1 small apple cored, pealed and chopped into small pieces
1 medium onion diced (about 1/2 cup)
1 tsp cloves
2 bay leaves
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
- Slice the cabbage into small stripts. I like to quarter it, cut out the stem and slice into about 1/8th inch strips
- Put everything in a large pot
- Cook over medium heat until cabbage is desired tenderness
Remove Bay leaves and any cloves you find before serving
This freezes very well especially if you leave it a little bit crunchy
For a little kick add a pinch of red pepper flakes or cayenne
